State grants in Alabama
Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP):
Eligible to Alabama residents, the Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) is a need-based state grant that ranges each year depending on available funds. For those attending eligible colleges, students can be granted $300 to $5,000 per academic calendar year. Nearly 80 institutions in Alabama participate in the program, so make sure to check with your school’s financial aid office to see if you qualify.
Alabama Student Grant Program (ASGP):
Unlike ASAP, the Alabama State Grant Program (ASGP) program is not a need-based grant. Instead, it’s offered at 12 independent eligible institutions in Alabama:
- Amridge University
- Birmingham Southern College
- Faulkner University
- Huntingdon College
- Miles College
- Oakwood University
- Samford University
- Spring Hill College
- South University – Montgomery
- Stillman College
- U.S. Sports Academy
- University of Mobile
The grant amount varies from year to year based on available funding, but it cannot exceed $3,000.
(Re)Engage Alabama Grant Program:
The goal of the (Re)Engage Alabama State Grant Program is to incentivize more adults in Alabama to seek out higher education or return to school to finish their degrees. This program is available to both full-time and part-time students, 25 and older, who have graduated from high school or have completed a program that is proven to be equivalent to secondary school. Each Alabama institution has a specific degree and programs for the (Re)Engage grant, so make sure to check out your institution’s financial aid office to see if this might be a good fit for you!
Alabama tuition reciprocity agreements
Alabama is a part of the Southern Regional Education Board Academic Common Market, which allows students going to public institutions to out-of-state schools and pay in-state tuition, if their degree is not offered in their home state.
