Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

Here are a few well-known Montana universities and their in-state vs out-of-state tuition costs:

University of Montana

  • In-state tuition: $7,412
  • Out-of-state tuition: $27,238

Montana State University

  • In-state tuition: $8,082
  • Out-of-state tuition: $31,400

How do you get in-state tuition?

It is clear to see that being a Montana resident significantly reduces the cost of tuition for Montana colleges and universities. In order to gain residency status in Montana for tuition purposes, you will need to be domiciled in Montana. Being domiciles means it requires both a physical presence in Montana and evidence of intent to stay in the state of Montana. Some examples that provide intent to stay include registering a vehicle in Montana, getting a Montana driver’s license, and registering to vote in Montana. However, it is important to note that you cannot establish residency while in Montana for the primary purpose of education. Therefore, double check with your intended Montana university to ensure that you qualify for in-state tuition.

Does Montana offer tuition reciprocity?
