How to win Montana scholarships

Montana is known as “The Last Best State” due to its pristine mountainous beauty and small town culture. Moving to marvelous Montana seems like an easy decision to make so let’s review how to win Montana scholarships to make this move affordable!

In order to win Montana scholarships, you should be sure to emphasize your personal connection to Montana in addition to your own personal passions. For example, if you grew up hiking in Glacier National Park and exploring the mountains, you can describe in detail about how amazing the natural beauty of Montana is as well as how this beauty inspired you to study conservation in order to preserve national parks such as Glacier.

By simultaneously describing your own passions and goals while emphasizing how great Montana is, you can prove to the scholarship officers that you will benefit from a scholarship to continue your education in Montana.

Writing resources for writing Montana scholarship essays

Winning Montana scholarships may require you to write an essay about yourself. Therefore, read over our Scholarships360 ultimate guide to finding and winning scholarships and our overview of common scholarship essay prompts to help ensure you are prepared to win Montana scholarships! Everything you need is at your fingertips with Scholarships360 from guides on how to start a scholarship essay to how to write a 500 word essay. Best of luck!

As you are starting your higher education journey, remember that scholarships allow students to take fewer loans. Make sure that you apply to as many scholarships as you qualify for!

Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

Here are a few well-known Montana universities and their in-state vs out-of-state tuition costs:

University of Montana

  • In-state tuition: $7,412
  • Out-of-state tuition: $27,238

Montana State University

  • In-state tuition: $8,082
  • Out-of-state tuition: $31,400

How do you get in-state tuition?

It is clear to see that being a Montana resident significantly reduces the cost of tuition for Montana colleges and universities. In order to gain residency status in Montana for tuition purposes, you will need to be domiciled in Montana. Being domiciles means it requires both a physical presence in Montana and evidence of intent to stay in the state of Montana. Some examples that provide intent to stay include registering a vehicle in Montana, getting a Montana driver’s license, and registering to vote in Montana. However, it is important to note that you cannot establish residency while in Montana for the primary purpose of education. Therefore, double check with your intended Montana university to ensure that you qualify for in-state tuition.

Does Montana offer tuition reciprocity?

Yes, Montana is a part of the Western Undergraduate Exchange which is a limited regional reciprocity agreement among select Western States. In this agreement, favorable college tuition rates in bordering states are sometimes possible through reciprocity.
