Colleges That Have Extended Their Enrollment Deadline for 2024

2024 has been an interesting year for college admissions to say the least. This is mostly because of the 2024-2025 FAFSA updates, which have caused major delays in the typical FAFSA timeline. For many students, financial aid can be a make or break factor when it comes to affording college. And many schools realize that without knowing their financial aid package, students may not feel comfortable enrolling. That’s why we are listing off all the colleges that are extending their enrollment deadlines, in order to give students more time to make their decision.

Before we get into the 2024 extended college enrollment deadlines, let’s go over what it means to enroll in a college. Once you get accepted into a school and decide you want to attend, typically the first step in enrolling is putting down an enrollment deposit.

Jump ahead to…

What is a college enrollment deposit?

A college enrollment deposit is a non-refundable deposit that essentially holds your spot at the college you chose to attend. Deposit amounts will vary depending on the school, but on average they can range from $100 to $400. That being said, some schools require deposits as large as $1,000. Every year, most colleges have a deadline of May 1st to put down the deposit, which is why May 1st is also known as “College Decision Day.”

This year, many colleges have decided to extend the deadline of when their enrollment deposit is due. It doesn’t matter when you submit your deposit, as long as it’s before the deadline. So, if you are thinking you may need more time to make your decision, check out the list below to see if your school has extended their deadline!

Top Colleges with Extended Enrollment Dates

Our top colleges consist of those that report highest levels of student success, along with student affordability.

Maybe you have decided to defer enrollment?

Even with extended enrollment deadlines, if you don’t feel comfortable committing to go to college in the fall, there is the option to defer your enrollment. This means that you’ll be able to delay going to school for a certain amount of time, without having to reapply when you are ready to attend. It is important to note that your financial aid package does have the potential to change if your family situation were to change from the time you apply to when you actually enroll, especially if you plan on deferring for more than one semester.

Most schools are pretty accommodating when it comes to deferment, but if this is something you decide would be in your best interest, make sure to reach out to your school earlier rather than later. Certain schools still require an enrollment deposit, even if you are deferring enrollment, so take that into consideration as well.

Frequently asked questions about college enrollment deadlines

My school hasn’t extended their deadline, but I need more time. What should I do?

Because of the FAFSA delays this year, many schools who have decided to not change their enrollment date, have instead decided to grant extensions on a case by case basis. So, if your school has not extended their deadline, reach out to your admissions officers and financial aid office to see if they would be willing to make an exception.

What if I can’t afford the enrollment deposit?

Enrollment deposits can be an unexpected expense, so if you don’t think you will be able to put together the finances in time, the first thing you should do is reach out to your school’s financial aid office as soon as possible to explain your situation. Some colleges offer enrollment deposit waivers! Another option is to either ask for an extension, or defer your enrollment until you feel like you are in a better place financially. Your enrollment deposit is only the start of your college expenses, so it’s never too late to start saving, get a part-time job, or even look into some side hustles. And, of course, start applying for scholarships!
