Resources for students studying communications
National Communication Association (NCA)
This organization is open to students, teachers, and practitioners alike! The NCA holds an annual convention and provides programs and tools for people to explore. It includes three student organizations for students to choose from: Lambda Pi Eta, Sigma Chi Eta, and NCA student clubs. They also have a career center to advise members on the job market, and the NCA offers grant opportunities to help members pursue their education.
Communication organizations at school
You can get connected with your peers or network with mentors by participating in organizations on or around your campus. For instance, some campuses have a faction of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) that allow guest speakers and discuss popular campaigns and methods.
There are also other societies and organizations for the varying divisions of communications, such as the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) or the American Advertising Federation.
Summer communications programs
If you’re interested in getting started early, there are multiple communications summer programs that you can get involved in. Some of them are geared toward high school students, such as the LaunchX Entrepreneurship Summer Program, which means you can figure out if this is the major for you before you even get on campus.
However, there are still communications programs offered for current college students that want to stay on top of their game during the summer like the St. John’s College Summer Academy.
