How to win scholarships for teachers
As with any type of scholarship, scholarships for teachers are highly competitive. You’ll have to stand out in your applications in order to earn money. Before you start applying, do some reflection.
Think about the experiences that have motivated you to be a teacher and jot them down. Then, think about the change you hope to make in the world and make a rough plan of how you’ll accomplish it. Finally, think about experiences you’ve had, whether they are tutoring kids after-school or taking care of your younger siblings, which help demonstrate that you have talent in the field. Jot all of these down with bullet points or however feels most comfortable to you. You’ll come back to this sheet later to help you write your essays!
Writing strong essays
Writing a great scholarship essay takes a lot of skill. It’s not quite the same as other types of writing. Our guides on starting and ending scholarship essays, writing about yourself, and writing a winning scholarship essay can help you through. We can also help you tailor your writing to 250 or 500 word prompts, and help you respond to the common “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” prompt. Good luck!
Resources for teachers
National Education Association
Teaching is a dynamic and community-oriented field. Being a part of a professional organization like the NEA can be helpful in keeping up with the state of teaching as well as making connections with teachers around the country. They also help advocate for teachers’ rights and a host of other beneficial initiatives for teachers.
Association of American Educators
The AAE focuses on empowering teachers and students through collaboration and advocacy. Members receive benefits such as scholarships, classroom grants, networking opportunities, supplementary insurance, literature on the current state of teaching, and more.
Regional teachers’ organizations
These national organizations are a great way to plug into a huge nationwide network, but remember that it can also be beneficial to plug into some more local organizations. Working with local orgs can give you a better idea of the state of education in your city, county, or state. You’ll also have more opportunities to meet in-person and perhaps to find a job in your community.
