State grants in Michigan

Michigan Tuition Grant:

The Michigan Tuition Grant is based on financial need and gives Michigan residents attending eligible institutions the opportunity to get their tuition covered. Participating institutions include Michigan schools that are non-profit and independent, and students must fill out the FAFSA in order to apply.

Tuition Incentive Program (TIP):

The Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) encourages lower income high school students to finish high school by providing funding for continuing education. In order to be eligible, students must have received Medicaid coverage for 24 months within a 36 month period. There are two phases of this program:

  • Phase I: Provides tuition assistance to students enrolled in participating certificate or associate degree programs.
  • Phase II: Provides tuition assistance to students who already have a certificate, associate degree, or 56 transferable semester credits.

Michigan tuition reciprocity agreements

Michigan is a part of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC). This organization comes from legislation that made it so 12 midwestern states can work together to provide tuition discounts. Most of these discounts come in the form of providing out-of-state students the opportunity to pay in-state tuition.

Here are the states in the MHEC:

Frequently asked questions about colleges in Michigan

What college in Michigan is the hardest to get into?

The college with the lowest acceptance rate in Michigan is the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, with only 20% of students being accepted. Just like how higher acceptance rates won’t assure you getting admitted, lower acceptance does not assure you being denied. So, don’t be discouraged from applying by a lower acceptance rate!

Does Michigan have tuition reciprocity?

Yep! Michigan is a part of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC), which means if you are a student looking to study out-of-state, you may have the opportunity to study in one of the MHEC’s partner states at a discounted tuition rate.

Why should I study in Michigan?

If you are a fan of sugary breakfast food, you’ll probably find no shortage of that in Michigan, as it is the birthplace of both cereal and pop-tarts. Beyond that, Michigan has a big college sports scene, as well as many different educational opportunities. Some popular majors at Michigan colleges include computer and information science, business and administration, and behavioral neuroscience. When you’re not studying you can take a break to visit one of the largest freshwater coasts in the country, or even try doing some ice skating or playing a game of hockey.
