Tacuna Systems is proud to announce the return of our Women in STEM Empowerment Scholarship program. For 2026, we will offer one award to a qualified candidate who attends or is admitted to a U.S. or Canadian university. Driven by our commitment to promote inclusive representation in STEM fields, our scholarship aims to empower women pursuing higher education in science and technology, fostering their increased participation in these industries. This scholarship invites applicants to share their experiences with a STEM-related research project or activity that has shaped or reflected their academic interests, rather than focusing solely on academics. Submissions must be in video form, accompanied by this application. As part of your application submission, we will require you to create a brief video of yourself showcasing your involvement in a STEM-related project. Limit this video to around 3 minutes in length. Things to consider while creating your video: Aspirations – What are your general career aspirations and how has this project influenced them? Passion – Why is this project important to you? Learning – What did you take away from this project? Application – How does this project relate to the real world? Improvement – What changes, if any, would you make for better results? Originality – Do you have valuable insight or ideas that industry leaders may not have thought about? Representation – What are your general thoughts, related to the project or not, on improving women’s representation in STEM? How might you inspire others? If you sound like a fit for this scholarship, we encourage you to apply!Show Less

How to win mechanical engineering scholarships

One of the first things to do when it comes to preparing your scholarship resume is to start looking for opportunities. Things like engineering internships, clubs or school projects not only pad resumes, but also give you material to write about in your scholarship application essays.

Speaking of essays, when it comes to applying to scholarships, polishing your writing skills is always a good idea. Check out our guides on how to start and end a scholarship essay, how to write a winning scholarship essay, and the best ways to respond to a “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” prompt.

For essay content, some questions to consider may be “why do I want to go into mechanical engineering,” “what are goals I wish to accomplish with an engineering degree,” and “what kinds of engineering projects do I find interesting and exciting?” To showcase your passion for mechanical engineering, use contextualization as a tool in your writing.

    Resources for mechanical engineering students

Many colleges and universities have student organizations specifically for those interested in mechanical engineering, so if you are currently in college, look for opportunities there! There are also some national organizations for electrical engineering students that aid in education and finding opportunities.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers

A national organization that focuses on providing educational resources, as well as offering certifications, conferences and publications for its members.

    Society of Women Engineers

SWE is a community of women in the engineering field, and they promote diversity and inclusion in the industry. They offer scholarships as well as mentorship opportunities to their members.

    Engineers without Borders USA

If you are looking to use your engineering skills to help communities then this might be a great organization for you! Not only is volunteering generally an awesome thing to do, but it also happens to look great on both resumes and applications.

    Tau Beta Phi

Tau Beta Phi is a National Honors Society specifically for engineering students and professionals. This organization shares a lot of educational resources with its members and offers scholarships to students!

Frequently asked questions about mechanical engineering

What is a good GPA for mechanical engineering?

While the idea of a “good GPA” can be very relative, generally high GPAs are considered to fall between 3.0 and 4.0. If you are looking to get into a mechanical engineering program, try and keep those grades up as much as possible. Since engineering courses tend to be very rigorous, schools typically want to see high GPAs to show that you can succeed academically.

What type of engineering is the most difficult?

Some students might find certain engineering concentrations more challenging than others. Objectively, engineering as a whole is considered a somewhat difficult major for most students, as a deep understanding of mathematics and physics is typically required. That being said, chemical engineering for instance requires a lot of chemistry, so if you know that this subject isn’t your strong suit, consider looking into other forms of engineering.

What type of engineer is in the highest demand?

Some of the highest growing engineering sectors include mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, medical engineering and environmental engineering.
