How to win mathematics scholarships
Now that you’ve got some great opportunities at your fingertips, it’s time to start sending out applications. Remember, most scholarships receive a large number of applicants, so you’ll want to put some substantial work into your applications in order to win.
Before you begin your applications, it’s a good idea to sit down and do some self-reflection. Think about why mathematics is important to you and how you hope to make change in the world through math. You can reflect back on your past experiences to see how they informed your interest in math, and think of anything you’ve accomplished that speaks to your potential in the field. Try asking some friends, family members, and/or trusted adults for insights into this. Oftentimes, an outside perspective can shed entirely new light on your achievements!
Resources for scholarship applications
Once you’ve finished your reflection, it’s time to start writing. Mathematics majors may not take extensive writing-based coursework, but a well-written essay can help you stand out from the other applicants. To succeed in this field, check out our article on how to start a scholarship essay. We can also help you write about yourself and write a winning scholarship essay.

Resources for mathematics students
As a mathematics student, you are eligible to join a large variety of different nationwide organizations that can help you apply your studies to the real world, meet other professionals, and even find more scholarships and/or job opportunities. Here are a few organizations of note for math majors around the country.
Math Alliance
This is a program at Purdue University that allows students to sign up as either mentors or students of mathematics. Students from underrepresented backgrounds are eligible for free mathematics tutoring from highly qualified tutors, such as students in doctoral and masters programs. Tutors receive the benefit of gaining teaching experience, meeting other mathematics professionals, and helping make mathematics a more inclusive field.
While this specific program is only available at Purdue, there are many similar organizations at larger learning institutions, so check if yours has one today!
Mathematical Association of America
Membership to the MAA comes with the benefit of access to an extensive library of mathematics journals, materials, and databases. It also provides access to conferences, networking, and other peer-led programming to help plug students into the larger field of mathematics.
Association for Women in Mathematics
In a field that has historically been dominated by men, organizations such as the AWM offer an important resource for women who are looking to start a mathematics career. Membership provides access to an exclusive Job Board, journals, networking events, and more.
Frequently asked questions about math scholarships
Can mathematics majors apply for STEM scholarships?
Yes! Mathematics is included in the STEM acronym as the last letter, so mathematics students are totally eligible for STEM scholarships. You’ll probably find that there are far more general “STEM” scholarships out there than there are math-specific ones. This is great for you as it means more opportunities for scholarship money.
You should also keep in mind that the more specific a scholarship is, the less people apply. So, if you do find math-specific scholarships, you’ll probably have less competition than you will in STEM scholarships.
Do I have to major in mathematics to apply for math scholarships?
Many mathematics scholarships do require a math major, but not all of them! If you have not decided on your major yet or are minoring in mathematics, check our list for any opportunities that would suit someone who is not fully committed to the field.
