The Scholarships360 Research Team reviews all scholarships individually and strives to exclude any scholarship where any of the below applies:

    • The scholarship requires paid membership in an organization (with certain exceptions for reputable trade organizations and others)
    • Student are required to sign up for a site or service to apply*
    • The scholarship seems primarily used for lead generation** or idea harvesting purposes***
    • The scholarship website has many grammatical errors and/or advertisements
    • The scholarship or scholarship providing organization seem untrustworthy
    • There is no evidence the scholarship was previously awarded
    • The scholarship has not been awarded in the past 12 months
    • There is no available contact information

If you believe a scholarship has been published in error, please reach out to [email protected] and we’ll take a look!

    * There are certain exceptions to this, for example if the sponsoring organization is a major corporation or nonprofit with its own scholarship application system.
** Lead generation scholarships will require students to sign up for an app or website and require minimal (if any) application requirements.
***Idea harvesting scholarships will require students to submit blog posts or other materials that companies may use for marketing purposes.

    How to win Maine scholarships

Maine is known as “Vacationland” because every day spent there is like a vacation! From the green pine trees to the blue Atlantic Ocean, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Maine.

In order to win Maine scholarships, you will need to respond to specific scholarship essays about your passions and goals. While responding to these essay prompts, you should be connecting back to Maine as a state and how it has helped you to realize and reach your goals.

For example, perhaps you enjoy fishing at the local lake which inspired you to study wildlife conservation in college. Or perhaps you love to go hiking in Acadia National Park which has led you to think about becoming a park ranger.

Whatever your passion is, be sure to connect it back to Maine! Doing so, will reveal how much Maine means to you and demonstrate that you are a great candidate for a Maine scholarship.

Writing resources for writing Maine scholarship essays

Many Maine scholarships may require you to write an essay about yourself which can range anywhere from a 250 word essay to a 500 word essay. Therefore, read over our Scholarships360 guide to finding and winning scholarships. Additionally, check out how to start and how to end a scholarship essay to ensure your scholarship essay will be perfect from beginning to end!

Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

Here are a few well-known Maine universities and their in-state vs out-of-state tuition costs:

    University of Maine

    • In-state tuition: $12,000
    • Out-of-state tuition: $34,740

    University of Southern Maine

    • In-state tuition: $8,910
    • Out-of-state tuition: $26,250

How do you get in-state tuition?

Having Maine residency status can greatly reduce the cost of tuition. In order to gain Maine residency for tuition purposes, you will need to live in Maine for one year prior to enrolling to a campus for purposes other than education. Additionally, you will need to establish a domicile which could include obtaining a Maine driver’s license, employment in Maine, or registering your vehicle in Maine. Maine institutions may have slightly different requirements for establishing residency. Therefore, make sure you are reaching out to your intended Maine institution to ensure you are meeting all necessary requirements to obtain in-state tuition status.

    Does Maine offer tuition reciprocity?

Yes, Maine has a tuition reciprocity agreement between Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Through this agreement, eligible students are charged a tuition rate that is significantly less than the regular out-of-state tuition rate. Be sure to double check if you are eligible to participate in this agreement and which institutions are available for you to study at.
