Each year, the prize awards $10,000 to multiple elementary, middle, and high schoolers who have made great contributions to communities, either local or far. The Gloria Barron Prize, a program of the nonprofit organization Young Heroes Project, celebrates inspiring, public-spirited young people from diverse backgrounds all across North America. Are you a high school student passionate about the U.S. constitution? If so, you may be interested in the American Legion Oratorical Contest! The contest is open to high school students age 20 or younger who write and recite a speech related to the U.S. constitution. The American Legion, a non-profit organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and dedicated to supporting American veterans and their families, hosts the contest. They started the contest to encourage appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students and invite a deeper understanding of it. Participating students will first partake in the contest at the post level, with those making it past moving to the state competition. Those making it past the first round of the state level will earn at least $2,000, and the winner of the national competition will make $25,000. If you are passionate about the U.S. Constitution and want to enter a speech contest to earn money for college, we encourage you to apply!

April checklist for students
High school seniors
- High school seniors will be making their college decision this month. While going by your “gut” can be useful, you should be focusing on the data too.
- Some students don’t know that it is possible to appeal for more financial aid! This can potentially help you decrease the cost of attendance (and the amount of student loans that you need to take out).
- Speaking of student loans, if you are considering taking out private student loans (which should only be taken out after your other financial aid, including federal loans are exhausted), you should use a student loan marketplace to shop around.
High school juniors
- Keep up the good work in the classroom! Junior year grades are extremely important in the admissions and scholarship selection processes.
- You will want to build a preliminary college list. Scattergrams are a great way to be data-driven as you craft this initial list.
- There are also a number of great scholarships for high school juniors. It is never too early to start applying for scholarships.

While you’re enjoying the spring weather, take some time to start applying for scholarships. April is a great time to get started because you can make the most out of your spring break. Even though you might be focused on relaxing, a 250 word essay or even a 500 word essay won’t take as long as you might think. Be sure to write about yourself and the experiences that make you an ideal and unique scholarship candidate.
