📝Sample Essay from a Scholarship Winner
Here's a winning scholarship essay from Chloe L, who won our "Follow Your Own Path" Essay Scholarship, which is a great option for community college students. Read the essay below and I'll offer some commentary on what made this a winner.
Prompt: How is your current education supporting your career goals?
Essay
I have always loved nature. It has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. As I got older, I became more aware and developed the critical thinking skills to see everything we were doing to the world around us, from the little things like littering to things as big as deforestation. And ever since then, I have always known I had to do something to protect the beautiful environment that surrounds us. In middle school I fell in love with my biology class and my teacher helped me to realize that science was my favorite subject. That year I figured out that science was how I was going to contribute to conservation efforts. At Colorado State University I am majoring in the degree of zoology. This degree most closely aligns with my goals. This program will allow me to develop a specialized set of skills geared towards ecosystems, conservation, and biodiversity. Ensuring I have the knowledge I need to truly protect and care for these creatures as well as their homes properly. My bachelors degree at Colorado State could be the one thing that would finally allow me to make the type and size of impact I truly desire to have and to change this world for the better. I am taking classes such as Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and so many others. This is giving me the basis of everything I need to be successful in this field!
Why it worked
Chloe uses her essay to describe exactly what motivates her to pursue her educational track. Then she gets into specifics. She describes the classes she's taking and her major and the skills she's trying to develop. This shows she's put a lot of thought into her educational track, and she has a plan. We are left confident that Chloe would make the most out of these educational funds.
