    Top public health scholarships overall

Our editorial team chose the following mental health scholarships by looking at three factors: Award amount, reliability of the offering institution, and wide eligibility requirements. That means each of these scholarships has been offered for some time, has a substantial reward, and a variety of students should be eligible to apply.

How to win public health scholarships

Because public health is a somewhat more of a specific sector of health care, you might find there to be more graduate opportunities than there are undergraduate. If you are about to be or currently an undergraduate student, you might want to broaden your search to be medicine as a whole. Better yet, start looking into local scholarships in your community, or ask about any opportunities within your school or potentially your school’s public health education department (if available).

Another thing to note is that because healthcare is typically somewhat of a rigorous course of study, scholarship providers will be on the lookout for applicants who show a keen interest in the field not only through their academics, but through their extracurriculars and essays as well.

If you’re looking to gain medical experience in high school, see if any hospitals or doctor’s offices near you are taking on volunteers or interns. This can be a great way to gain experience for your resume and to write about in scholarship application essays.

As for your essays, the key is to keep things concise and impactful. Check out some of our guys like how to write a 250 word and 500 word essay, how to write about yourself, and how to write a winning scholarship essay

    Resources for public health students

Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE)

SOPHE is a nonprofit that raises awareness about public health and advocates for public health education. Its members range from professionals working in hospitals, to educators working in schools. They have many educational resources for students as well!

Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)

CEPH is an organization working towards assured quality in public health education and training in order to advance the science and practice of public health. This organization is a great tool for students, with a search tool to help students find an accredited program and a job portal.

    American Public Health Association (APHA)

APHA is an organization that connects public health researchers and professionals in order to build a wide community of members who are passionate about the state of American public health. They host events and webinars, as well as public health continuing education.

Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health

Delta Omega is an honor society for public health that originated at John Hopkins Universities, but now has chapters at colleges across the US. They offer leadership development, networking opportunities and discounted resources to their members. They currently have 127 chapters, but if there is not already a local chapter available to you, they offer steps to establish your own chapter as well!

Frequently asked questions about public health scholarships

What undergraduate degree is best for careers in public health?

Generally biology is one of the most popular undergraduate majors for students interested in going into any health related field because this degree gives students a detailed understanding of the science behind all living things. That being said, some schools do have specific public health departments so that students can receive a BA or BS in public health.

Do scholarships only apply to CEPH-accredited public health programs?

CEPH accreditation means that schools and programs have been vetted and approved by the Council on Education for Public Health. While there are plenty of scholarships that don’t require this specific accreditation, some may require it. If you are unsure whether or not you qualify, try to reach out to the scholarship committee directly to make sure.

Are there more graduate scholarships for public health than undergraduate?

There are scholarships available for graduate and undergraduate students studying public health, but you might find that there are more grants and funding available to graduate students. Undergraduate students are also not typically eligible for fellowships, as those are mainly about researching more nuanced topics in public health.
