Are you an undocumented immigrant student who came to U.S before the age of 16? If so, you may be eligible for the Dream.US Opportunity Scholarship! The scholarship is offered by TheDream.Us, the nation’s largest college access and success program for DREAMers, or immigrant youth who came to the U.S. at a very young age without documentation. TheDream.Us believes that all DREAMers need is an opportunity, and providing them with financial support to complete college will give them that opportunity. Thus, each year, the Dream.US Opportunity Scholarship awards up to $80,000 to students to help cover the costs of one's bachelor’s degree program at one of their Opportunity Partner Colleges. If you’re an undocumented immigrant student residing in a locked-out state who is passionate about pursuing a postsecondary education, we encourage you to apply!

Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

Here are a few well-known North Dakota universities and their in-state vs out-of-state tuition costs:

North Dakota State University

  • In-state tuition: $9,309
  • Out-of-state tuition: $13,963

University of North Dakota

  • In-state tuition: $10,951
  • Out-of-state tuition: $15,570

How do you get in-state tuition?

In order to qualify for these great in-state tuition rates for North Dakota institutions, you will need to become a North Dakota resident! Becoming a North Dakota resident requires you to physically reside in North Dakota for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the application date. You will need to provide proof of this such as a home mortgage or lease agreement in your name. Additionally, you will need to submit a valid North Dakota identification card, permit or driver’s license issued 10 months or more prior to your application date.

Does North Dakota offer tuition reciprocity?

Yes, North Dakota participates in a few tuition reciprocity and exchange programs to help lower the amount of tuition that non-residents have to pay.

One of these programs is the Minnesota-North Dakota Tuition Reciprocity Program which means that under certain circumstances, a Minnesota resident may attend a North Dakota public university and pay the established reciprocity fee. The same can apply to North Dakota residents attending Minnesota public institutions.

Another program that North Dakota participates in is the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP). In this program, students from participating MSEP states will pay no more than 150 percent of in-state resident tuition to attend participating institutions in select Midwestern states.
