Minority scholarships serve an important purpose in helping students from historically underrepresented backgrounds fund their higher education. Generally, minority scholarships are aimed at supporting students from underrepresented racial backgrounds including African American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American students. Some of these scholarships will also support first-generation college students and students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.

- The scholarship requires a fee to apply
- The scholarship provider’s privacy policy allows for the misuse of student data
- The scholarship requires paid membership in an organization (with certain exceptions for reputable trade organizations and others)
- Student are required to sign up for a site or service to apply*
- The scholarship seems primarily used for lead generation** or idea harvesting purposes***
- The scholarship website has many grammatical errors and/or advertisements
- The scholarship or scholarship providing organization seem untrustworthy
- There is no evidence the scholarship was previously awarded
- The scholarship has not been awarded in the past 12 months
- There is no available contact information

* There are certain exceptions to this, for example if the sponsoring organization is a major corporation or nonprofit with its own scholarship application system.

National Black Student Alliance
The National Black Student Alliance is a great example of an nationwide organization that casts a huge net and connects people all across the country and from all walks of life. Although this is just one example, organizations like this exist for a great many minority groups.
Organizations at your school
Many colleges and universities have campus organizations tailored to specific minority backgrounds. These organizations can help connect you to fellow students around campus, as well as offering job opportunities and networking with alumni. They are also great ways to make connections around school, especially if you are just starting out.
Professional organizations tailored to your minority group and profession
There are many national organizations out there that serve the interests of members of minority groups who work in a certain profession. One example is the National Association of Black Accountants. Organizations like this provide networking and job opportunities to minority groups pursuing a profession. Be sure to check for one that suits your background and interest!
