LinkedIn Learning: Everything You Need to Know

LinkedIn may be a site that you are familiar with–perhaps you even have your own profile. But did you know that LinkedIn is more than a professional networking site? In this article, we’ll discuss all things LinkedIn Learning and show how it can help you level up your skills and your resume!

About LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning offers courses in three main categories: business, technology and creativity. So, whether you know what you want to learn, or just want to explore, there’s a good chance they’ll have something for you!

Courses that you complete on LinkedIn Learning will be available for employers to see on your LinkedIn profile. In addition to certifications, the platform offers continuing education units and prep material for professional certifications and exams.

Professional certification prep

Professional certifications are certifications that you typically receive after completing an exam. The exam will cover specific material about topics in a designated career field or area of learning.

These certifications help employers find individuals who are becoming and trying to remain proficient in their fields. LinkedIn Learning offers prep courses for over thirty different professional certification programs.

While the platform does not offer the professional exams themselves, they do provide you with the materials you’ll need to ace those exams! From Google to Abode to the FAA, LinkedIn Learning offers opportunities to level up your professional resume!

Continuing education units

Continuing education units, also known as CEU’s, may or may not be something you’re familiar with. For those who have careers that do require a specific amount of CEU’s per year, or every few years, LinkedIn Learning can be a great place to help you knock them out and learn along the way.

To learn more about CEU’s and professional certification prep materials, LinkedIn Learning has outlined all their courses and partners for you!

Memberships

LinkedIn Learning offers both group and individual memberships. Along with these memberships, you’ll have access to over 20,000 courses and a LinkedIn premium membership.

Courses on LinkedIn Learning include videos, quizzes, and more to help you retain what you learn and stay engaged. And don’t forget, certificates of completion will be viewable by employers on your LinkedIn Profile!

Individual annual memberships

  • 1-month free trial
  • $240/year ($19.99/month paid in a lump sum)

Individual monthly memberships

  • 1-month free trial
  • $39.99/month

LinkedIn Learning gives you a reminder the week before your one-month trial ends, so you’ll have ample time to decide if it is right for you.

In addition to individual memberships, LinkedIn Learning also encourages businesses to take advantage of their team memberships to help employees remain competitive in their fields. Whether you have two people on your team or twenty-two, they’ll have a plan for you.

Is LinkedIn Learning worth it?

LinkedIn Learning’s professional networking opportunities and their library of courses make them a force to be reckoned with. If you have a career you love and you like staying up to date with current technology and business, then this is probably the site for you!

However, if you’re looking to learn more about one topic specifically, earn academic credit, or earn certifications that will help qualify you for a specific job, this may not be the site for you. But have no worries because there are lots of other learning platforms out there!

Questions to consider:

  • What are you trying to learn about?
  • Are you looking to earn credits at an academic level?
  • How much time do you have to invest in courses each week?

Be honest with yourself when you answer these questions. If you only have a few hours a week, then starting with simpler courses on LinkedIn Learning might be a great first step for you. If you do have a good amount of time to invest, starting with something a little more challenging might be worthwhile for you.

Alternatives to LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning is a great online educational option, and it is easily accessible to anyone with a LinkedIn account. However, it is only one of many online learning options out there. Before you decide to commit to the platform, it’s a good idea to weigh your alternatives.

A great place to start is our list of the top ten online learning platforms. On the list you’ll find options that are geared towards professional certifications like Coursera and edX. You’ll also find options that are more geared towards recreational learning and exploring a field to see if you’re interested. These include MasterClass, HITRECORD, and CodeAcademy.

So, before you spend money on LinkedIn Learning, make sure to check out your other options and decide which is the right fit for you!
