The Shaver-Hitchings Scholarship is available to any graduate student, physician's assistant, or medical student in the Triangle area of North Carolina who has worked (preferably as a volunteer) to help others with alcoholism, drug abuse, and addictive disorder treatment, or with preventive education on the subject of addiction. To be eligible, applicants must reside in Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake County (North Carolina). The fund is designed to recognize the recipient for his or her work or volunteer activity and to provide financial aid. The Achievement Scholarship for Refugees and Immigrants in Wake County was established to provide financial support for refugee and immigrant high school graduates who reside in Wake County and will be continuing their education in a post-secondary setting. The goal is to support these students on a pathway to finding meaningful employment and becoming contributory members of their communities and adopted country. Selected recipients will earn up to $16,000 each, which can be used towards any need listed under the school’s total cost of attendance. The Almac Scholarship Fund was established to give back to the communities in which Almac employees live and work, namely to the residents of Durham, Orange, Wake, and Chatham Counties in North Carolina. Thus, every year, the Almac Scholarship Fund grants financial support to 1st-year college students with financial need who reside in the above counties and are pursuing 4-year degrees at a North Carolina public college or university. While there is a preference for students pursuing majors or careers in STEM, students pursuing any field of study may apply so long as they meet the other eligibility requirements. Scholarship payments may be used for any "cost of attendance" and are worth $12,500 per year. The scholarship may be renewed for up to three additional years (for a total of $50,000) as long as the student maintains good academic standing (2.5 GPA) and submits semester reports to continue receiving funding. Ward Scholarship is open to permanent residents of Durham, Orange, Wake, or Chatham Counties in North Carolina who plan to attend an in-state 4-year public or private college or university. The scholarship was established through a gift from the estate of Benjamin F. Ward in order to honor his life and commitment to education and community service. Thus, recipients will be selected based on their financial need and commitment to community service. The $2,500 scholarship may be renewed for up to three additional years, meaning recipients who maintain good academic standing can earn a total of $10,000 to help cover the costs of attendance over four years of college.
