While some high school students go back to school in August, many students begin their school year in September. The month of September is a busy one as students get acclimated to new classes, potentially playing fall sports, and get back into their clubs.

If you are a high school senior, September is even more busy with lots of admissions-related tasks. Most senior students will begin to work on their essays, applications, and start finalizing their college list. September is also an excellent time to get back into the habit of applying for scholarships! Whether you are in high school, college, or graduate school, there are a number of excellent opportunities available to you.

Volunteering and advocacy are some of the most direct ways to make positive change or impact in your community and society as a whole. For this reason, the Acorn Equality Fund is looking to not only celebrate, but also financially support young LBTQIA+ students (or the children of LGBTQIA+ parents) who are politically involved. They do this through the McKeon Scholarship, worth between $1,000 and $4,000, that is annually awarded to LGBTQIA+ residents of Illinois, or their children, who are politically involved in their community. Specifically, applicants must reside in any Illinois county except Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, or Will County, and attend or plan to attend any accredited post-secondary educational institution to qualify. To be considered for the scholarship, interested students must submit a ~500-word essay “describing [their] involvement in the political community,” and their beliefs about the political process. An additional essay entitled "About Me" is required in which they must either detail (a) how being LGBTQIA+ (or being the child of LGBTQIA parents) has impacted them or (b) where they see themselves in 10 years, their dreams, and how they will use their "talents to improve the quality of life for gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender people." Letters of recommendation and official transcript(s) are also required. If this sounds like a good fit, we encourage you to apply! Despite the hardships that may come with being part of a minority or underrepresented group, such as the LGBTQIA+ community, many individuals in such groups find consolation in the strong community and support they give and receive from fellow members. In line with that, the Acorn Equality Fund is providing the Luke Scholarship to financially support young, academically impressive members of the LGBTQIA+ community. To qualify for the scholarship, worth up to $4,000, applicants must be LGBTQIA+ residents of Illinois, or their children, who reside in any Illinois county except Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, or Will County, and attend or plan to attend any accredited post-secondary educational institution to qualify. To be considered for the scholarship, interested students must submit a ~500-word essay “describing [their] educational success stories and the obstacles [they] have had to overcome in order to be successful,” as well as an explanation of their financial need and how the scholarship would help them. An additional essay entitled "About Me" is required in which they must either detail (a) how being LGBTQIA+ (or being the child of LGBTQIA parents) has impacted them or (b) where they see themselves in 10 years, their dreams, and how they will use their "talents to improve the quality of life for gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender people." Volunteering, especially for communities that are underserved or otherwise disadvantaged, is one of the most giving things that an individual can do. Gardner Dam Camp is an exciting camp experience located in Langlade County, Wisconsin, that features white water kayaking, a climbing tower, canoeing, 75 miles of mountain biking trails, and hosts a Webelos Summer Camp. The enjoyment of the campers largely relies on the kindness and skills of the camp scout and staff members who unselfishly share their time to "make the summer a positive experience." One of these staff members was Drew A. Hegner, a Wisconsin native, former Eagle Scout, and Gardner Damp Camp Waterfront Director who unfortunately passed while deployed in the army. In honor of Drew's memory, the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region is offering a $1,500 scholarship. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must, like Drew, be Gardner Dam Camp staff members. Immediately after their summer employment at the camp, individuals must plan to attend a trade or vocational school, or a 2- or 4-year college or university to qualify. Selection criteria include academic achievement and motivation to succeed and serve. If you're working (or will work) at Gardner Dam Camp and fit the criteria, we encourage you to apply! The scholarship is open to US citizens with a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution who are pursuing a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission (MACC) offers the British Marshall Scholarships to finance the education of promising young Americans. Renowned Indiana philanthropist Paul W. Ogle established a foundation under his name in 1979, meant to continue his generous legacy of giving that involved contributions to "create parks, fuel tourism efforts, rehabilitate historic buildings, support volunteer fire departments, and fund scholarships." As of 2020, the Ogle Foundation has granted approximately $100 million to nonprofits and educational institutions in the Southern Indiana region he called home. To continue Paul's legacy, the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana is now offering a scholarship in his name. Each year, the Paul W. Ogle Scholarship awards a maximum of $20,000 over four years ($5,000 per academic year) to high school seniors from a Clark, Floyd, Scott, Washington, Harrison, or Switzerland County high school in Indiana. The scholarship is awarded to these schools on a rotating basis, meaning that five (5) schools in the region are chosen each year to qualify (and only their students can apply for that given year). Thus, before applying, we recommend checking out the official Paul W. Ogle webpage to see if your school is eligible. Applicants must also be ranked in the top 25% of their class to qualify. If you’re a high school senior interested in scholarships for Indiana residents, we encourage you to keep exploring Scholarships360 and apply. Good luck with your scholarship search!Show Less
