Offered by Association for Women in Mathematics
Alice T. Schafer was a trailblazing American mathematician and one of the founding members of AWM, or the Association of Women in Mathematics. Not only did she teach higher-ed students at Connecticut College, Swarthmore College, and the University of Michigan, but she also staunchly believed in helping those students “who had difficulties with or were afraid of mathematics” by designing special classes for them.
In her honor, AWM established the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize, which annually awards up to $1,000 to multiple undergraduate women who demonstrate excellence in mathematics and who are nominated for the award (self-nominations allowed). To nominate someone for the scholarship, nomination packets must include: one letter of nomination, a copy of the nominee’s transcripts, and additional supporting materials (e.g. reports from summer work using math, copies of talks given, etc.).
If this scholarship sounds like a fit for you, we encourage you to apply! Keep on reading for more application details.
