How to win civil engineering scholarships

When it comes to applying for scholarships, even STEM scholarships, there is usually a writing component. That’s why it is important to polish your writing skills in order to write as concisely and impactfully as possible. When it comes to shorter essays, check out our guide for writing to 250 or 500 word limits. Some other great reads on this topic include “how to write a winning scholarship essay” and how to start and end a scholarship essay.

Besides writing, take a look at the other components of an application such as whether it has a GPA requirement, whether you need recommendations, and if you’ll need a resume for the scholarship. Looking for extracurricular opportunities in civil engineering might be worth your while, as these experiences not only look great on resumes, but they also give you more material to use in your writing.

    Resources for civil engineering students

Many colleges and universities have student organizations specifically for those interested in civil engineering, so if you are currently in college, look for opportunities there! There are also some national organizations for civil engineering students that aid in education and finding opportunities.

    American Society of Civil Engineers

This organization has some great resources for both college and high school students, such as mentoring programs and educational opportunities and events. They even produce engineering films that you can watch in select science center theaters for a more enriching experience.

    Society of Women Engineers

SWE is a community of women in the engineering field, and they promote diversity and inclusion in the industry. They offer scholarships as well as mentorship opportunities to their members.

    Engineers without Borders USA

If you are looking to use your engineering skills to help communities then this might be a great organization for you! Not only is volunteering generally an awesome thing to do, but it also happens to look great on both resumes and applications.

    Tau Beta Phi

Tau Beta Phi is a National Honors Society specifically for engineering students and professionals. This organization shares a lot of educational resources with its members and offers scholarships to students!

Frequently asked questions about civil engineering scholarships

Is studying civil engineering in college hard?

While levels of difficulty will vary from student to student, generally engineering is considered to be quite a rigorous major. This is because it requires students to have a very in depth understanding of subjects like advanced mathematics and physics.

What are some of the biggest engineering programs?

When deciding where to go to school, take into account the amount of classmates you may have. For instance, if you feel you’d thrive in an environment with lots of other students, check out the Georgia Institute of Technology, as they have one of the biggest engineering programs in the country.

What civil engineering specialties are in highest demand?

According to experts on LinkedIn, the top civil engineering specialties that are currently in demand include transportation engineering, environmental engineering and structural engineering.
