While the Boren Scholarships are open to undergraduate students, the Boren Fellowships are open to graduate students. The Awards are named after David L. Boren, who felt that “the U.S. would work more and more through partnerships with other countries whose needs and perspectives needed to be more fully understood.” Today, the scholarship awards up to $25,000 to Boren Scholars and up to $30,000 to Boren Fellows. The scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students studying one of SMART's ~24 approved STEM disciplines. The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Program is funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) and offers STEM students educational and workforce opportunities. Their mission is to “inspire, cultivate, and develop” STEM students to develop their future careers. In addition to having their full tuition expenses paid and the opportunity to partake in research internships, recipients are awarded a stipend worth between $30,000 and $46,000 a year. However, bear in mind that winners must also commit to post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense. The Maryland State Delegate Scholarship is offered ​to Maryland residents who plan to pursue a postsecondary credential full-time (12+ credits undergraduate or 9+ credits graduate per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits ​undergraduate or 6-8 credits graduate per semester) at a two-year or four-year Maryland college, university or private career school.​ To be considered for the scholarship, interested students should contact their local delegates for instructions on how to apply. In addition, they must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 1st. Students who are not eligible for the FAFSA must complete the Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA) instead. Maryland residents whose majors are not available at any Maryland institution may apply through the Unique Major Application. Are you a high school student passionate about the U.S. Constitution? If so, you may be interested in the American Legion Oratorical Contest! The contest is open to high school students age 20 or younger who write and recite a speech related to the U.S. Constitution.  The American Legion created the contest to encourage appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students and invite a deeper understanding of it. Participating students will first partake in the contest at the post level, with those making it past moving to the state competition. Those making it past the first round of the state level will earn at least $2,000, and the winner of the national competition will make $25,000. If you are passionate about the U.S. Constitution and want to enter a speech contest to earn money for college, we encourage you to apply!
