    From UVA

When the University of Virginia was founded in 1819, it didn’t just break the mold of higher education. It became a center for critical thought, designed not just to create a better kind of university but better leaders and a more educated society. In a setting of extraordinary beauty and tradition, students gather to exchange ideas, dream boldly, and commit themselves to a better society and world.

Every UVA student is unique representing a range of backgrounds, regions, and experiences. Yet there are defining traits that each of our students share. They are barrier-breakers, transforming obstacles into opportunities. They are world-changers, willing to lead and follow. They are wave-makers, challenging convention and imagining the unimaginable. But what truly defines a UVA student is not their accolades or achievements, but rather their unswerving commitment to serve the greater good.

UVA students will choose from more than 60 majors across eight schools and colleges. Nationally recognized as the best financial aid program of any public institution in the country, UVA is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all domestic students.

We admit you based on your achievements and potential, not your ability to pay. 100% of your financial need will be met through scholarships, grants, work-study and need-based loans when you submit a FAFSA and CSS Profile.

    Admissions

    Admissions Overview

    From UVA

Successful applicants to UVA are students who have done well academically within the context of their high school or college setting, based on their coursework and grades. While taking into consideration what is offered and recommended within a student’s school, we are interested in applicants who embrace academic challenges across the curriculum, and who are successful within the classroom space. We also look for applicants who have the ability to contribute to the academic life of the University.

Further, we seek students who engage in impactful activities and experiences within their schools and communities, and we are especially interested in how these activities and experiences have shaped their character, skills, and knowledge. We are deeply interested in students who show kindness, care, and compassion to others and demonstrate character and integrity in all they do. We are also interested in students who directly or indirectly lead others, or who have the potential to lead, ethically and collaboratively.

1415 is the median SAT score and 34 is the median ACT score for admitted students at UVA. A score that is close to this median value indicates that you have a good chance of admission to the institution. However, it’s important to remember that colleges judge applications holistically. If the rest of your application is strong, it’s possible to make up for lower test scores.

Do I qualify for an application fee waiver at UVA?

UVA accepts the Common App Fee Waiver, so any student who applies via the Common App and qualifies for this waiver can submit their application free of charge.

    Is UVA test-optional?

University of Virginia is test-optional, which means that applicants are permitted, but not required, to submit their standardized test scores. If you choose not to submit your scores, admissions officers will weigh your grades, extracurriculars, essays, and interviews more heavily. If you aren’t sure whether to submit your standardized test scores, Scholarships360’s guide on whether to submit your test scores to test-optional schools can help.

What test scores do you need to get into University of Virginia?

Colleges use standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or CLT as one of many factors to determine their admissions decisions. A high score on one of these tests does not guarantee admission to a college, and a low score does not guarantee rejection. However, the majority of accepted applicants to University of Virginia receive between a 32 and a 34 on their ACT, or a 1365 and a 1525 on their SAT.

What is the application deadline at UVA?

Students must apply by January 5 to enroll at UVA during the fall semester. Remember that college applications involve many pieces, including essays, a transcript, letters of recommendation, and more. Be sure to start your application as soon as you can to make sure you have enough time to make it as compelling as possible.

At UVA students also have the opportunity to apply Early Decision. In order to take advantage of this option, you’ll have to have your application in by November 1.

And if you’re considering applying Early Action at UVA, remember that the deadline is November 1.

Do Early Action or Early Decision applicants have a better chance of getting into UVA?

    From UVA

We maintain a consistent review throughout the application process so there is no advantage to choosing one application plan over another. We hope to offer students multiple options and the ability to choose the option that is best suited for them. All students applying for financial aid who have submitted the required documents by the priority deadlines will receive a preliminary aid award shortly after admission decisions are released.

Early Decision is a binding admission plan for students who have determined that UVA is their first choice and who feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed. Students admitted through the Early Decision admission plan are required to cancel their applications elsewhere and enroll in UVA.

Early Action is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that may be an attractive option for those feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed.

Regular Decision is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that allows students more time to complete the application and to have grades from the first term of their senior year considered in the review.

What is the transfer application deadline at UVA?

The deadline for transfer students to apply to UVA is March 1.
