The Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship celebrates the legacy of a young journalist of color who lost his life while covering the Korean War. Ken was a 22-year-old cameraman for the International News Service who was killed aboard an Army aircraft while covering the Korean War. In his honor, this award is granted to California-based college journalists of color with the goal of promoting diversity in newsrooms. Applicants must have completed at least their freshman year of college and be from Los Angeles, Orange, or Ventura County (California) to qualify. To be considered for the scholarship, they must submit a 500-word essay, proof of enrollment/acceptance in a journalism program, a resume, journalism work samples, and a letter of recommendation from a professor or instructor. One (1) recipient will be awarded $1,500 to help fund their journalism education.
