Are you a college-bound, Native American high school senior or college sophomore who is pursuing a career in the teaching profession? If so, you may be eligible for the Gordon Horgen Scholarship! Each year, the scholarship awards up to four $750 scholarships to aspiring Native American teachers. The scholarship was named in honor of Gordon Hogen, a science teacher of 41 years who advocated for all his students and worked with Native American instructors and guest speakers to better understand the culture. The South Dakota Education Association is a professional organization working hard for educators, so they can continue to work hard for students. SDEA members provide a wide range of professional education services in communities throughout the state. They teach in kindergarten classrooms and college lecture halls, counsel adolescents and assist in carving out career aspirations, drive school buses, prepare for careers in education, prepare school lunches, and direct school plays and coach soccer. They also provide professional services that benefit students, schools and the public in virtually every position needed to run South Dakota's schools. Since their founding, SDEA members have worked to advance the finest of American dreams - a high quality public education for every child.
