Scholarship Review Process

The Scholarships360 Research Team reviews all scholarships individually and strives to exclude any scholarship where any of the below applies:

  • The scholarship requires a fee to apply
  • The scholarship provider’s privacy policy allows for the misuse of student data
  • The scholarship requires paid membership in an organization (with certain exceptions for reputable trade organizations and others)
  • Student are required to sign up for a site or service to apply*
  • The scholarship seems primarily used for lead generation** or idea harvesting purposes***
  • The scholarship website has many grammatical errors and/or advertisements
  • The scholarship or scholarship providing organization seem untrustworthy
  • There is no evidence the scholarship was previously awarded
  • The scholarship has not been awarded in the past 12 months
  • There is no available contact information

* There are certain exceptions to this, for example if the sponsoring organization is a major corporation or nonprofit with its own scholarship application system.
** Lead generation scholarships will require students to sign up for an app or website and require minimal (if any) application requirements.

Scholarship Overview

Do you belong to a group (race, sexuality, disability, etc.) that has been historically underrepresented on study abroad programs? Further, are you currently attending a university that is a member of the IES Abroad Consortium? If both apply, consider applying to the David Porter Need-Based Diversity Scholarship! The scholarship is offered biannually, with deadlines on May 1st and November 1st of each year. Each application cycle, the scholarship awards up to $5,000 to two lucky applicants. In order to apply, students must apply to an IES Abroad Program and complete the connected application. The scholarship is offered by IES Abroad, an organization with a mission to “educate students to become global leaders through premier study abroad and internship programs.”

Eligibility information

This scholarship is open to students attending IES Abroad Consortium schools who belong to groups that have been historically underrepresented on study abroad programs. This includes, but is not limited to, students identifying by a certain race, sex, color, religion, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, age, marital status, national origin or ancestry, ethnic origin or veteran status. Applicants must also meet the below eligibility requirements and apply to an eligible study abroad program.
