The Critical Language Scholarships annually award the full travel costs to multiple postsecondary students in the U.S. who are interested in studying abroad to learn languages “essential to America’s engagement with the world.” Selected students for the program will spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 13 critical languages. These include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
