Being a member of the Girl Scouts comes with a wide array of advantages, but one that most people don’t know about is the scholarship opportunities. In addition to being a valuable asset for college and scholarship applications, Girl Scouts, especially those who earn the Gold Award or Silver Award, are qualified for many great scholarships. Let’s go over all the ways in which Girl Scouts can earn scholarships through their participation in the organization.

The first way is through scholarships that are offered to Girl Scouts across the nation. The second way is through regional Girl Scout scholarships. Many local chapters offer scholarships to their members. Our third category is scholarships offered by specific colleges. Finally, Girl Scouts can earn scholarships by leveraging their extracurricular activity on scholarship applications.

Now, we’ll get into each one of these routes to scholarships and show you exactly how Girl Scouts can earn scholarship money.

    Scholarship Review Process

The Scholarships360 Research Team reviews all scholarships individually and strives to exclude any scholarship where any of the below applies:

    • The scholarship requires a fee to apply
    • The scholarship provider’s privacy policy allows for the misuse of student data
    • The scholarship requires paid membership in an organization (with certain exceptions for reputable trade organizations and others)
    • Student are required to sign up for a site or service to apply*
    • The scholarship seems primarily used for lead generation** or idea harvesting purposes***
    • The scholarship website has many grammatical errors and/or advertisements
    • The scholarship or scholarship providing organization seem untrustworthy
    • There is no evidence the scholarship was previously awarded
    • The scholarship has not been awarded in the past 12 months
    • There is no available contact information

If you believe a scholarship has been published in error, please reach out to [email protected] and we’ll take a look!

    * There are certain exceptions to this, for example if the sponsoring organization is a major corporation or nonprofit with its own scholarship application system.
** Lead generation scholarships will require students to sign up for an app or website and require minimal (if any) application requirements.
***Idea harvesting scholarships will require students to submit blog posts or other materials that companies may use for marketing purposes.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is a prestigious honors granted to Girl Scouts who have completed two Senior or Ambassador Journeys, or have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and completed one Senior or Ambassador Journey. These Journeys involve finding a local or global issue, researching it, and forming and carrying out a plan to tackle the issue with the help of a team. The Crutchfield-Healy Memorial Scholarship is a way to further recognize the accomplishments of a GSSN (Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada) Ambassador Girl Scout who has won the Gold Award. Established by Kathy Healy-Justice and named after her parents, the annual scholarship is open to graduating high school GSSN members who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. Applicants must also have applied for or be enrolled in a four-year college or university. One recipient is chosen per year to receive $2,000 towards her post-secondary education. Local scholarships

    Scholarships through the Scouts

In addition to national scholarships, many local Girl Scout chapters offer scholarships. For example, the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital offers a $1,000 scholarship to Gold Award recipients. To find scholarships offered by your chapter, try visiting your Girl Scout chapter’s website.

You can also talk to your Scout Leaders to find out about any opportunities that might not be posted on the site. For example, some scholarships may be available on a state-wide basis while others are only on a regional basis.

    Other scholarships

In addition, many local organizations offer scholarships to Girl Scouts in the region. For example, the Indiana Women’s Education Foundation offers a $1,000 scholarship every year to an Indiana Girl Scout high school senior. The National Girl Scouts website contains a database that includes a host of local scholarships offered by external organizations. This is a great place to start if you are looking for local Girl Scout scholarships.

Girl Scout Gold Award scholarships at specific colleges

Girl Scout scholarships are also available on a college-by-college basis. Many of these opportunities can be very lucrative; Millsaps College offers a $15,000-per-year scholarship to admitted Gold Award-winning Girl Scouts. But they are only one college on a list of over 50 that give scholarships to Girl Scouts.

This list on the National Girl Scouts website contains all of these schools and allows you to filter results by state. If you are on the college search and want to find a school that will give you aid for your work in the Scouts, it is the perfect tool. And if you are currently in college and wondering if your school has Girl Scout scholarships, it can also be very useful. You can also try checking with your financial aid office or college’s website.

Using your Girl Scouts experience to win other scholarships

Girl Scouts are at a great advantage when it comes time to apply for scholarships. The Girl Scouts organization emphasizes many of the traits which are most commonly sought in scholarships. Girl Scouts demonstrate leadership and are able to apply their lessons to real-life situations.

If a scholarship asks you to speak about your involvement in your community, your teamwork abilities, or the hobbies you are passionate about, Girl Scouts is a perfect anecdote. It’s an activity that emphasizes responsibility, working as a team, and many other characteristics that are perfect for scholarships.

Students who have remained involved in the Girl Scout organization by the end of high school have shown caring for their community by fostering new generations of scouts. You can use anecdotes from camping trips, from lessons you learned as a child, and lessons you’ve taught newer scouts. If you need any help applying your Girl Scout experience to applications, we’ve got you.

Check out our guides on how to write about yourself and how to write a winning scholarship essay. We can also help you adjust to the length of your given prompt. Whether it’s a 500 or 250word essay, we’ve got you covered. And if you’re using your Girl Scouts experience for admissions, check out our guide on how to add activities to the Common App.

Frequently asked questions about Girl Scout scholarships

Does being a Girl Scout help you earn college scholarships?

Yes! Being a Girl Scout can qualify you for regional or national Girl Scout Scholarships, such as the Gold Award scholarship. It can also automatically qualify you for scholarship funds at some schools you apply to; for example, Gold Award Girl Scouts who gain admission to Millsaps College earn an automatic $15,000-per-year scholarship.

Girl Scouts can also use their experience in the Scouts on your scholarship applications to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, community engagement, and more. Being a Girl Scout is helpful for pretty much any college scholarship you apply for, especially leadership scholarships.

Do colleges care if you are an Girl Scout?

Colleges do care if their applicants are Girl Scouts! Colleges view Girl Scouts as a demonstration of a student’s community engagement, teamwork, initiative, and responsibility. If you were in Girl Scouts, be sure to include the activity on the Activities Section on the Common App. You can also use your experience on the Scouts as great material for your college essays.

What colleges value Girl Scout students?

Being a Girl Scout is an impressive addition to your college resume, and it will help you gain admission or earn merit scholarships anywhere. Additionally, some colleges have special scholarships set aside for Girl Scouts, such as Ole Miss’ Eagle Scout/Gold Award Scholarship or Florida Institute of Technology’s $2,500 grant for any admitted student who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout or the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Do employers care if you are a Girl Scout?

It depends. If you are in high school, many employers will view your Girl Scout status as an impressive testament to your responsibility, discipline, and teamwork abilities. However, Girl Scouts one of those activities that will “age” on your resume. Once you reach college, or graduate college, you should consider removing Girl Scouts from your resume, unless you are applying to a job where the experience is especially relevant, such as a camp counselor position.
