How to win scholarships for bilingual students

Winning scholarships is not an exact science, but since many scholarships require essays for applications, one thing you can do to help your chances is polish up on your writing skills. That way you can write the best possible essay, which is especially important when you’re working with limited word counts. Start by checking out our writing guides on how to start and end a scholarship essay, how to write a winning scholarship essay, and the best ways to respond to a “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” prompt. And if you do run into a prompt with a small word limit, we can help you tailor your writing to 250 or 500 words.

As for the content of your essays, you might want to start thinking about ways to contextualize your experience as a bilingual student. For example, adding details about how or why you became bilingual can help personalize your essays and show your passion for learning different languages.

    Resources for bilingual students

Finding a community of other bilingual students is one of the best resources you can have. To do this, start looking for clubs or student organizations on your campus for students who speak the same languages as you. Most colleges have fairs or other opportunities to learn about clubs offered on campus or they have clubs listed on their website. If you’re unable to find an already established club on your campus, consider starting your own! Below are some national organizations that offer additional opportunities to students.

    National Association for Bilingual Education

This organization advocates for the education of bilingual students. They host events and send out a newsletter to inform their members, and offer programs for professional development. They encourage students to participate in the organization, even offering resources for students interested in giving TED talks.

    Modern Language Association

If you are looking to become an educator in your second language or are just generally into language as a field of study, try looking into the Modern Language Association. This organization will connect you with other scholars and also has their own job list.

Frequently asked questions about scholarships for bilingual students

Do colleges care if you know multiple languages?

Typically, colleges do not factor in knowing multiple languages into their college applications, though some states do have class requirements in order for students to graduate. That being said, knowing multiple languages is an extremely valuable asset when it comes to finding a job. This is especially true in customer-facing roles, but having multiple languages on your resume is impressive in most contexts.

    Is knowing ASL considered bilingual?

American Sign Language is federally considered a foreign language, which means that if you know ASL and speak English, you would be considered bilingual!
