Frequently asked questions about accounting scholarships

Do I have to major in accounting to earn an accounting scholarship?

Most of these scholarships require that applicants plan to major in accounting. That being said, if you earn a scholarship but later decide to change your major, you won’t have to pay back the money in most cases. If you won a renewing award, you may be unable to renew it if your major changes.

So, although most of these scholarships require that applicants plan on majoring in accounting, they also know that plans can change and you will probably be able to keep the award if you end up changing your major.

How can I pay for an accounting degree?

There are many ways out there to pay for an accounting degree. It’s a good idea to take full advantage of every possible opportunity. That includes filling out the FAFSA, seeing if you qualify for the Pell Grant, applying for outside scholarships, and applying for school-specific scholarships. Many students also have to take out loans. Another great strategy for finding scholarships is looking for local scholarships. Because the competition is usually less numerous, you have a better chance with local scholarships.

Does accounting count as STEM?

Generally, accounting counts as a business major and not a STEM major. However, this definition may vary somewhat by school. Furthermore, in 2021, Congress introduced a bill to include accounting under the STEM umbrella. Whether or not it passes, it indicates that the definition of accounting may be changing in the public eye.
