Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of this amazing woman. The scholarship supports New Jersey students pursuing nursing or healthcare studies who demonstrate academic promise, compassion, and a commitment to serving others, reflecting the values that guided Kate’s life and career. Born in Bound Brook, New Jersey, in 1936, Kate followed her calling to nurture and heal by earning her nursing degree from St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She went on to serve for over 50 years as a registered nurse in Labor and Delivery at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick. Throughout her distinguished career, Kate was recognized as Nurse of the Year (1985) and received a Lifetime Achievement Award (2010) for her extraordinary compassion, dedication, and service. Kate, a proud mother of eight children, exemplified the ideals of faith in action, lifelong learning, and professional excellence. Kate was known for her warmth, humor, and steady grace under pressure—qualities that inspired generations of nurses who worked beside her. The Katherine Elizabeth Geiger, R.N. The New Jersey Brain and Spine Healthcare Scholarship is a $2,000 award created to recognize and support students who are passionate about pursuing a career in healthcare. Whether your path is medicine, nursing, neuroscience, psychology, or another healthcare-related field, NJBS wants to honor your dedication to improving the lives of patients and shaping the future of care. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be high school seniors or current undergraduate students residing in or attending school in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania. Applicants must also be pursuing a degree in a healthcare-related field. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of NJBS physicians and administrators. Essays will be evaluated based on relevance to the prompt, originality, commitment to a healthcare career, and clarity of writing. The recipient will be selected based on overall strength of application and alignment with NJBS’s mission of advancing healthcare through exceptional patient care. The scholarship recipient will receive a $2,000 award to support their education. The winner will be featured on the NJBS website and social media channels as part of their commitment to celebrating the future leaders of healthcare. If so, consider applying for the Rise Up Scholarship! Each year, the scholarship awards up to $1,000 to multiple LGBTQIA+ students and their allies who submit an essay or video explaining their role in the LGBTQIA+ community and how this scholarship would benefit their education. The primary recipient will receive scholarship disbursement semiannually with current funding of up to $1,000 per year. Continued eligibility will be evaluated on a semiannual basis. Maximum duration of the award will be for a period of 4 years (8 disbursements), contingent on funding. Additional recipients may also be provided with one time awards, dependent on funding.
