What are HBCUs?

HBCUs, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities, are schools established with the intention of serving the Black community. Each of these schools was founded before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when it was much harder for African-Americans to receive an education.

While students of any race can enroll at these institutions, the majority of most HBCU student bodies continue to be made up of Black students. Public figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, Thurgood Marshall, and many more have all graduated from HBCUs.

What to consider when deciding on an HBCU

There are many reasons a student might decide to enroll at a HBCU. Black students often say they feel a sense of community at these schools. They also tend to offer a lower cost of attendance than the national average. However, it’s worth noting that HBCUs have issues just like any other school. A 2019 study showed that on average, HBCUs have a 70% lower endowment than their non-HBCU counterparts. The same study showed a huge drop in federal funding for these schools in the last twenty years.

This lack of funding can lead to lapses in the quality of education. Some HBCUs may not have the funds to invest enough money in each of their students. Keep in mind this varies by institution; if you are considering an HBCU, be sure to look up its financial situation and take it into consideration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the #1 HBCU in America?

Spelman College has some of the best student outcomes of any HBCU. Their graduates go on to earn more and take out less debt than most other HBCUs.

That being said, each university has different programs in different departments, and the best fit for you is not always the same as the top ranked college. You should be sure to weigh your personal preference when choosing a school. Try planning a college tour to decide which campus makes you feel more at-home.

What college has the highest percentage of Black students?

The answer to this question varies year by year, but usually the answer is Spelman, whose student body was over 97% Black in 2023.

What HBCU is hardest to get into?

Tuskegee University had the lowest admissions rate in 2023, with 34% of applicants accepted. However, admissions is always a highly subjective process, and a lot can depend on the college’s admissions priorities that year and the essays and application of the student.
