Dr. Whelan was an exceptional aviation educator who not only served 25 years as an Air Force aviator, but who would also went on to serve as a professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy and eventually held dean positions at multiple universities. In honor of his lifelong involvement in aviation education and service to his community, his 12 children and their spouses commissioned the Paul and Patricia Whelan Scholarship.
To qualify for the scholarship, individuals must be undergraduates (excluding freshmen) or graduate students at a University Aviation Association (UAA) member institution. Applicants must also hold a minimum 2.5 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in their aviation major coursework and should demonstrate a passion for aviation, leadership, and extracurricular/community involvement. Preference will be given to those with FAA certification as a pilot or mechanic, former/current military service members (including ROTC), and those involved in an aviation-related association or professional group. One or more recipients will be awarded the $2,000 scholarship each year.

The University Aviation Association's mission is to promote and foster excellence in collegiate aviation education by providing a forum for students, faculty, staff, and practitioners to share ideas, to enhance the quality of education, and to develop stronger programs and curricula. The Association also influences aviation education policy at all governmental levels, and provides and nurtures the linkage between college aviation education, the aviation industry, and government agencies.
