Offered by Horizons Foundation
The Markowski-Leach Scholarship is annually awarded to LGBTQ+ post-secondary students who will be enrolled full-time in a program that will lead to a degree or a teaching credential at a select California university. Eligible universities include San Francisco State University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of California, San Francisco, or University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Students applying to or transferring into one of these Universities are encouraged to apply, even if their application has not yet been accepted. The scholarship was established as a result of the vision of Tom Markowski and Jim Leach to assist in the education of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people who would then have an impact on other LGBTQ people through their works.
If you’re an aspiring educator and LGBTQ+ student at an eligible university, we encourage you to apply! Keep on reading to learn more.
The Horizons Foundation, since its founding in 1980, has been the world's first community foundation of, by, and for LGBTQ people. Horizons regularly makes grants supporting the entire LGBTQ community. Their support is intentionally broad, because the needs of the community are so many and run so deep. At the same time, their venture philanthropy approach looks favorably toward innovative, grassroots solutions to the LGBTQ community's emerging needs, especially those of the most under-resourced segments of the community.
