The Scholarships360 Research Team reviews all scholarships individually and strives to exclude any scholarship where any of the below applies:

  • The scholarship requires a fee to apply
  • The scholarship provider’s privacy policy allows for the misuse of student data
  • The scholarship requires paid membership in an organization (with certain exceptions for reputable trade organizations and others)
  • Student are required to sign up for a site or service to apply*
  • The scholarship seems primarily used for lead generation** or idea harvesting purposes***
  • The scholarship website has many grammatical errors and/or advertisements
  • The scholarship or scholarship providing organization seem untrustworthy
  • There is no evidence the scholarship was previously awarded
  • The scholarship has not been awarded in the past 12 months
  • There is no available contact information

Scholarship Overview

Are you a graduate psychology student conducting LGBTQ-related research? If so, consider applying for the Malyon Smith Scholarship Research Award! The research award is open to graduate students who study psychology and are researching sexual orientation and gender identity. The scholarship is offered by The Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (SPSOGD), a division of the American Psychological Association (APA). They work to promote public education and provide funds to advance research for psychology and LGBT+ research. The Malyon-Smith Scholarship honors past presidents Alan Malyon and Adrienne Smith, who founded the division, while directly supporting young researchers’ work. Each year, multiple students receive up to $1,000 to help fund their proposed research projects. If you are passionate about psychology and LGBTQ+ research, we encourage you to apply!

This scholarship is open to full-time graduate students receiving their degree in psychology at an institution of higher learning. Applicants must conduct research on sexual orientation or gender identity and meet the below eligibility requirements.
