The Hugh A. Smith Scholarship Fund is a fantastic opportunity for students in Kansas who are looking for financial assistance to pursue their education. This scholarship is open to high school seniors, college freshmen, and sophomores who are enrolled or intend to enroll in an approved junior college, college, university, or trade school located in the state of Kansas. The applicant must be the son or daughter of a veteran who has been a member of The Kansas American Legion and/or Kansas American Legion Auxiliary for the past three (3) consecutive years. The children of a deceased member whose membership was paid up in The American Legion and/or Auxiliary in the year of death are also eligible. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a teacher, a high school transcript, their latest 1040 income statement of supporting parent(s), and a recent picture for publicity purposes only.
The American Legion Department of Kansas is a war-time veterans community-service organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. The Department thus provides aid to veterans and sponsors youth programs to maintain an ongoing concern, support and commitment to the veteran community. In addition, the American Legion is strongly committed to maintaining a strong national defense.
