    June 2025 Winning Essay

Creativity and courage are intrinsically linked, a dance between the vulnerability of self-expression and the fortitude required to share one's soul with the world. To create is to birth a piece of oneself, and to share that creation is to stand exposed, offering it up for judgment, acceptance, or rejection.

For years, I had written poetry in the solitary confines of my journal. My words were a private language, a sanctuary where I could distill my emotions into stanzas. The thought of sharing these deeply personal reflections was paralyzing. The fear of my words being dissected, my sentiments misunderstood, or my craft deemed amateurish, was a formidable barrier. It was the fear of my innermost self being held up to the light and found wanting.

The turning point came when a respected professor encouraged our class to submit our work to a university-wide literary competition. My initial reaction was a visceral ""no."" It was a call to be brave. With a trembling hand, I selected three of my most personal poems and submitted them.

The days leading up to the announcement were a crucible of anxiety and self-doubt. Yet, underneath the fear, a nascent sense of liberation grew. I had let my words, my true self, step out from the shadows. When the results were posted, and I saw my name among the winners, the feeling was not just one of validation, but of a profound, internal shift.
