Offered by Bezos Scholars Program
Are you a U.S. public high school junior passionate about increasing your leadership skills and leading change in your community? If so, apply to the Bezos Scholars Program, a transformative, yearlong, no-cost leadership development program that amplifies youth voice and action so young people with passion can start making a difference today!
Each year, 12 juniors from the U.S. and 5 from Africa, along with educators from each of their schools, are selected as Bezos Scholars. Community Change Projects are the program’s core as every Scholar creates and implements a project that raises awareness and mobilizes action to address a need in their hometown. Though the program does not offer financial scholarships, Scholars form lasting friendships, experience an all-expense paid trip to Aspen, CO and attend the Aspen Ideas Festival, receive leadership training and personal coaching and support, receive FREE personalized college advising for an entire year, as well as earn $1,000 to launch their projects which can be reapplied for annually! Successful Scholars are passionate, intellectually curious young people who are rising leaders in their schools and communities.
The Bezos Scholars Program began in 2005 when its founders, Jackie and Mike Bezos, attended the Aspen Ideas Festival, a premiere gathering of leaders from around the globe, and wondered, “Where are the young people?”
Since then, the program has evolved from a way to include outstanding students at the festival to a rich, year-long leadership development program spanning the U.S. and Africa—one that not only delivers specific and measurable learning outcomes, but also amplifies youth voice and action by supporting scholars as they produce real-world projects aimed at positive change.
To be eligible to apply, U.S. students must be current juniors at a public school with an overall free and reduced lunch rate of 30% or higher. They must also have taken or be currently enrolled in at least one advanced course (Honors, AP, IB, etc.) during high school. See below for additional eligibility information. The program is part of the Bezos Family Foundation, whose mission is to invest in the science of learning and the experiences that youth need to pursue their own path for success.
