The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)’s Awards for Advanced Study or Research in the USA offer funding to Scandinavians to undertake study or research programs at the graduate and post-graduate level in the United States for up to one year. Candidates for awards from Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are recommended to ASF by their cooperating organizations. However, ASF accepts applications directly from Danish students who wish to study or conduct research in the United States. In order to apply, submit applications to the appropriate cooperative organization listed on ASF’s website. Awards are made in all fields. For Danish students, special funding is available for graduate research or study in the U.S. on Holocaust studies, Jewish history, anti-Semitism, genocide, conflict resolution, racial or religious intolerance, or human rights. If you’re a Scandinavian pursuing graduate study or research in the U.S., we encourage you to apply!

Fields of study include medicine, law, design, art and architecture, history, language and literature, archaeology, philosophy, mathematics, and chemistry and the grants are supported by 40 funds held by ASF and earmarked for these purposes. ASF also helps bring American and Scandinavian life, art, and thought to public audiences by giving financial support to other institutions through its Public Project Grants program. In addition, a translation competition, held annually since 1980, recognizes outstanding translations of poetry, fiction, drama, or literary prose originally written in a Nordic language.
