The Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship annnually awards a renewable $2,500 scholarship (can be received for up to four years for a total of $10,000) to a college-bound Oregon high school senior from a family affected by alcohol or drug addiction. This includes those who have been raised by a parent or guardian who has experienced addiction, as well as those who have abused alcohol or drugs and are now pursuing recovery. To be eligible for the $10,000 scholarship, students will need to include in their application a one page (maximum) letter of support from a teacher, coach, school counselor, adult mentor, pastor, etc. describing their character and why they are being recommended for this scholarship. Volunteers of America Oregon specializes in family safety, substance use, behavioral health, and reentry from the criminal justice system. For 125 years, they have been empowering individuals, families, and communities in Oregon including the aging population, young people, men and women returning from prison, people with disabilities, domestic violence survivors, and those recovering from addictions. Through their work, they aim to touch the mind, body, heart – and ultimately the spirit – of those they serve, integrating a deep compassion with highly effective programs and services.
