Are you an incoming college student who is part of the LGBTQ+ community? Further, have you attended high school or received your GED in the D.C. Metro Area? If so, SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders) may have the perfect scholarship opportunity for you!
Sophie’s Live Out Loud Award, worth up to $5,000, is open to incoming undergraduates who have graduated high school or received their GED in Washington D.C., or the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia. Applicants must also be part of the LGBTQ+ community, demonstrate leadership in the community, and be aged 24 or younger. The scholarship was named in honor of Sophie Magerl, a young LGBTQ+ woman who never let her cancer diagnosis stop her creativity.

The SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders) supports and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the Washington, DC, metropolitan region. Through youth leadership, SMYAL creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to build self-confidence, develop critical life skills, and engage their peers and community through service and advocacy. Committed to social change, SMYAL builds, sustains, and advocates for programs, policies, and services that LGBTQ youth need as they grow into adulthood.
