Pittsburgh, known as the “Steel City,” was originally established as a link between the Atlantic Coast and the Midwest. Today, besides steel, the area also receives many immigrants from all around the world. If you’re a high school senior from the Pittsburgh area, and you’re an immigrant from an African country, The Pittsburgh Foundation may have the perfect scholarship for you!
Each year, their Oliver L. Johnson and William A. Lester Families Scholarship awards $5,000 (can be renewed three times) to high school seniors from Allegheny County, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington, or Westmoreland County. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and plan to attend an accredited vocational or technical trade school OR 2-or 4-year college or university. Preference will be given to African American students or black African students born in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal-Gambia, Zaire, Kenya, or Cameroon.
