Mervin and Eleanor Holzhausen are a Hancock County-native couple who worked tirelessly to improve the schools and education efforts in their home and all around the country. While Eleanor worked for several years as a substitute teacher and then as the library aide at Mt. Vernon Middle School, Mervin, at one time or another during his career as an educator, Mervin worked for every school corporation in the county.
In their honor, the Mervin K. and Eleanor E. Holzhausen Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial support to young Hancock County residents looking to pursue careers in education. To qualify for the $3,000 scholarship, individuals must be graduating seniors of a Hancock County, Indiana public high school who received a seventh-semester minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must also be planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education at a college or university in Indiana.
Selection will be based on financial need. Preference may be given to a student whose parent is an employee of a Hancock County, Indiana public school, but it is not required to apply.
