Alexander Maisin was a man who fought against and triumphed over his early-life hardships. At the beginning of World War II, his Russian Jewish family immigrated to Harbin, China to escape discrimination. When he became a young adult, he relocated to San Francisco as an immigrant with no savings. He first worked as a longshoreman before saving up enough money to buy and invest in properties throughout the city. Wanting to help other young students carve their own paths, he established a scholarship fund to “make a difference in the lives of the people in the San Francisco Bay Area.”
To be eligible for the Maisin Scholar Scholarship, individuals must be high school seniors in the San Francisco Unified School District with plans to attend college or an accredited education program in the Fall immediately following their high school graduation. Applicants must also have a minimum GPA between 2.0 and 3.5 and demonstrate financial need. Each year, 75 selected recipients will earn as much as $3,000 for up to four years to help them achieve their dreams.
On top of the monetary award, Maisin Scholars also receive virtual check-ins, access to a 6-week summer workshop to prepare them for college, and more. If this sounds like a good opportunity for you, we encourage you to apply! Plus, don’t forget to check out our other California scholarships available on the Scholarships360 platform. Happy applying!
