The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship for U.S. post-secondary students pursuing a career in primary health care. The scholarship pays students’ entire tuition and fees and provides a monthly stipend for living expenses and an annual stipend for other educational costs. In return, scholarship recipients must serve at an NHSC-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) after graduation.
In this article, we’ll break down exactly how to qualify for the NHSC scholarship. We’ll also detail what programs you can use it for and the terms of your service commitment. Finally, we’ll compare the NHSC Scholarship and the NHSC Loan Repayment program and list other healthcare scholarships and grants for students pursuing a medical degree. Let’s get into it.
How to qualify for an NHSC Scholarship
US Citizens and US Nationals enrolling as a full-time post-secondary student in an eligible primary health care program are eligible to apply. However, not all eligible students will receive the scholarship; the NHSC Scholarship is highly competitive and favors students with exceptional academics and a strong track record of community service.
What can I use an NHSC Scholarship for?
You can use an NHSC Scholarship to pay for post-secondary degree programs in the following disciplines:
- Physician
- Dentist
- Nurse practitioner
- Adult medicine
- Family medicine
- Geriatrics
- Primary care pediatrics
- Psychiatric mental health
- Women’s health
- Nurse midwife
- Physician assistant
The scholarship covers all tuition and fees and provides stipends for living and educational costs. For the 2025-2026 school year, recipients’ living expense stipend is estimated at $1,631 per month. This is in addition to a variable annual stipend.
What is the NHSC Scholarship service commitment?
After graduating, recipients of the NHSC Scholarship must serve one year of full-time primary care for each year of the NHSC Scholarship they received, with a minimum of two years of service. The service must be in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
Scholarship recipients can receive up to four years of funding from the NHSC Scholarship, so their service commitment can range up to four years.
HPSAs are defined by a shortage of health professionals, whether those are medical, mental, or dental. The shortage may be defined by geographic areas, populations, or facilities.
Recipients may complete their service commitment in the following types of facilities:
- Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)
- FQHC look-alike

NHSC Scholarship vs NHSC Loan Repayment
The NHSC Scholarship is a great opportunity for service-minded students pursuing a career in healthcare, but it’s highly competitive. Be sure to look into other opportunities to make your education affordable, such as the NHSC Loan Repayment program.
Unlike the NHSC Scholarship, the NHSC Loan Repayment program cannot help you with your education costs up-front. However, it can make your loans more manageable. If you serve at an NHSC-approved program after graduation, you could qualify for loan repayment between $30,000 and $80,000. The amount depends on your field of medicine. Spanish speakers are also eligible for higher repayment amounts.
Like the NHSC Scholarship, the Loan Repayment program is competitive. The program has a fixed budget each year and can only accept a set number of students. However, it’s a great opportunity to reduce your loan debt and can be helpful for students who did not receive the NHSC Scholarship.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I don’t fulfill my NHSC Service Commitment?
If you fail to repay within the timeframe, the government may garnish your wages, render you ineligible for Medicare and Medicaid, and invalidate your medical license in over 20 states.
So, failing to complete your obligation after graduation is very financially unwise. If you struggle with your work placement, you can contact the program to look into a new placement.
