The program is open to the dependent children and spouses of Veterans who suffered a disability or death, or who were declared missing or captured. Applicants must also be attending an accredited public institution in California. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) offers this program for California veterans and their families. CalVet works to serve the veteran community through education, advocacy, and direct services. To apply, interested students must submit a letter stating qualifications and intentions, three letters of recommendation, two letters from the principal or Counselor of the school from which he or she is a graduate, or from an advisor or instructor at their current college or university and from a representative citizen, certifying to the applicant's character, Americanism and scholarship. The initial contribution was made by Dr. Robert Muehrcke, a veteran of the 132nd Infantry Regiment, to provide college tuition assistance to dependents of members of the Americal Division Veterans Association.  To be eligible for this $4,000 scholarship, applicants must be children or grandchildren (including those by adoption) of current and deceased Americal Division Veterans Association members. This $4,000 scholarship is offered to high school seniors who are the child or grandchild of an honorably discharged veteran or active duty military member. This includes members of the National Guard and Reserves. Applicants must also have a 3.0 GPA or higher, meet the AMVETS/FAFSA requirements of a Regular Student, and agree to authorize AMVETS to publicize scholarship awards.
