The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship is currently being offered by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for high school seniors. One hundred and fifty scholarships will be awarded this program year, and thirty-one of the awards total $10,000 each. These four-year scholarships are disbursed at the rate of $2,500 per year and are renewable annually. The remaining 119 of the scholarships are one- time $1,000 grants.
To apply, applicants must be a son, daughter or grandchild of a Teamster member. Financial dependents (i.e., stepchildren and wards) of Teamster members are eligible if the member contributes in excess of 50% of the applicant’s financial support and if the applicant is a financial dependent of the member for federal income tax purposes. Applicants should rank in the top 15% of their high school class, have (or expect to have) excellent SAT or ACT scores, and demonstrate financial need. The application involves a list of activities, an academic record section (to be completed by your guidance counselor), and questions for your family member/guardian who was a member of the Teamsters.
The application for this scholarship (including the activities list, membership verification, and academic record) must be received by the Scholarship Fund by March 31, 2012. To submit your application, forward it to the local Teamsters union, system federation, or BLET national division. Best of luck!
