The I Read “Dead” Languages Scholarship is just what true classicists have been waiting for! There are not many available scholarships for students majoring in the Classics, Latin, or Greek. Why you ask? There is an erroneous perception that these subjects are not applicable to our “modern world.” That view is incorrect for so many reasons, starting with the fact that undergraduate classics majors have higher GRE scores than any other major. It is no surprise that they also have higher success rates when it comes to Law and Medical School acceptances as well. The so called “dead” languages of Greek and Latin make learning come alive! Studying classic texts in their original language helps us better analyze, communicate, and understand our complex world from a historical vantage point.
Who is eligible to apply for the I Read “Dead” Languages Scholarship?
Both undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the Classics, Latin, or Greek are eligible to apply. Students with any GPA will be considered
Please respond to the prompt listed below in a 100 to 500 word essay. Sound too easy? The essay must be written in Classical (Attic or Homeric) Greek or Latin! As a Classics major, this will be a welcome challenge for you. In regard to receiving this scholarship, please answer the following prompt:
Why do you feel it is important to support you in your continuing studies?
Since this is an essay scholarship, the main criteria for selecting a winner is by the strength of their essays. Therefore, make sure that you allow enough time for the writing process. Before you hit that final “submit” button, ask a fellow Classics major to proofread your Greek or Latin essay.
How much is the I Read “Dead” Languages Scholarship worth?
The scholarship award is $1,000. The award will be paid directly to the winner’s educational institution.
When is the application deadline for this scholarship?
The application deadline is April 30, 2020. The lucky winner will be announced on July 31, 2020.
