Launched in 2001, Simil Raghavan and Mary Mathias started the Engineer Girl website in order to bring attention to the amazing opportunities open to women engineers. Even though more women are entering the engineering field, they are still underrepresented in the field. Perhaps you are asking why does this matter? Having a greater number of women in engineering encourages diversity of thought, which ultimately leads to innovation. Innovation drives economic growth, which ultimately makes for a better future for all of us. The Engineer Girl Writing Contest is a an amazing opportunity to be creative as you choose!
Who is eligible to apply for the Engineer Girl Writing Contest?
The contest is open to individual girls and boys in the following three competition categories: Elementary School Students (grades 3-5), Middle School Students in (grades 6-8), or High School Students (grades 9-12).
This year, the writing prompt asks applicants to “Write a piece that salutes engineering’s role in meeting and defeating the challenges presented by COVID-19.” The website staes that:
The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly changed how we work, learn, and play. Making these changes were – and continue to be – an immense challenge. Fortunately, this is the kind of challenge that engineers are made for.
Let those words inspire you as you write! Since this is an essay scholarship, make sure answer the prompt and allow yourself plenty of time to draft, write, and revise.
