The Buck Beneschott Native American Scholarship awards an ambitious Native American student as they peruse higher education. It was created in honor of retired psychologist Buck Beneschott, who spent many years working on the Paiute Indian Reservation. In creating this scholarship, Buck’s son wants to not only honor his father, but also bring attention to the needs of the Native American living in North America. Did you know that just 17% of Native Americans continue education beyond high school? Sadly, some tribes report unemployment as high as 85%. Not surprisingly, the median income of Native American households are 70% less than that of the nation as a whole. The aforementioned issues all contribute to higher rates of alcoholism, depression, and other health issues. Despite the odds, many Native Americans are vibrant leaders and achievers. This scholarship honors Buck Beneschott and supports the next generation of young Native American students.
