Who is eligible to apply for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Scholarship?
Students between the ages 13 through 18 are eligible to enter! Applicants must be 13 by April 1, 2020, and not older than 18 (not yet 19) as of 11:59 PM PDT on October 1, 2020.
How do you apply?
Explain a big scientific idea in Physics, Life Sciences, or Mathematics with a short video (3:00 minutes max).

Keep in mind that the winner is required to attend the awards ceremony in November 2020 (date yet to be decided).
Remember, your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever appeals to you. On the website, there is a reminder that the selection committee reminds applicants that video is a “dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.”
The videos are judged according to the following criteria:
- Engagement
- Illumination
- Creativity
- Difficulty

How much is the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Video Contest Scholarship worth?
The winner will receive a $250,000 post-secondary scholarship. In addition, the winner’s teacher will receive a $50,000 prize, and their school will get a new $100,000 science lab.
When is the application for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Video Contest Scholarship due?
All video submissions are due no later than June 25, 2020, so plan accordingly!
